Jefferson Davis (1865-1868), and George Washington Custis Lee vs. Grant played a main part in the Union’s Victory. It sounds deeply racist to modern ears, but such rhetoric was boilerplate for Northern newspapers, even many of those generally friendly to the administration, throughout the war. Before Lee could escape, a Union force under Philip Sheridan boxed him in and he surrendered at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865. That it was not possible to end the agitation over slavery became further apparent in 1859 when on the night of October 16, John Brown, who had escaped punishment for the Pottawatomie massacre, staged a raid on Harpers Ferry, Va. (now in West Virginia), designed to free the slaves and, apparently, to help them begin a guerrilla war against the Southern whites.
